Magnesium for Migraines & Headaches

Updated: Aug 2, 2019

Picture this: it’s 3:00 pm on a Monday. It’s already been a long day, and there’s no end in sight when you feel the familiar twinge in your temple signaling a whopper of a headache on the horizon. Headaches are a pain, literally and figuratively. They make it hard to accomplish anything, and if you’re one of the people who gets them on a semi-regular basis, we bet you’re over it.

If it’s migraines that have got you down, that’s usually even worse.

Magnesium oil can help.

First, headaches. Magnesium oil combats headaches from a variety of angles. It quiets down our nerves to reduce stress and anxiety which can help prevent tension headaches from the onset. It also is a an excellent general pain reliever, and can help to calm down a headache once it starts. In addition, magnesium oil can lower blood pressure which can help provide headache relief. (1)

When it comes to migraines, magnesium still works as a stress-reducing pain reliever, but there’s an added benefit for migraine sufferers. Low levels of magnesium impact a variety of receptors and neurotransmitters that can cause migraines. And during a migraine attack, people have lower levels of intracellular magnesium. Studies have shown that increasing your body’s magnesium levels through supplementation can reduce the frequency of migraines! (2)

Our advice? Use magnesium oil consistently to prevent the onset of headaches and migraines. If a headache slips through the cracks, try upping your daily dose a bit to see if you can stop it in its tracks.
