Understanding CBD

Updated: Aug 2, 2019

In the US, knowledge about Cannabis is on the rise. While you may know the basics about marijuana, what about the rising popularity of CBD products? Are they similar to marijuana? Are they legal? What do they do?

Read on my friend, we’re here to help.

What is the difference between marijuana and CBD?

Marijuana plants and hemp plants are cousins. They’re two varieties of the umbrella plant - cannabis sativa. (1) However, the plants’ properties and uses are quite different.

Marijuana plants are packed with up to 30% THC, the component of marijuana that gets you “high.” Marijuana plants are not typically used to make the CBD products that are becoming popular throughout the U.S.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is a compound that is found in a higher proportion in hemp plants, which are used to make most of the CBD products available in the U.S. Because hemp plants contain less that 0.3% THC, products derived from them will not get you “high.” CBD is not psychoactive, but rather is thought to serve therapeutic purposes in the body.

How does it work?

Researchers have learned that the body has an Endocannabinoid System (EGS) which plays a role in maintaining homeostasis in the body. The EGS has receptors designed to work with endocannabinoids, which are produced naturally in the body. External cannabinoids (like CBD) have the ability to match the body’s endocannabinoid receptors and can help regulate the EGS. (2, 3)

Because of the ability to interact with the EGS, studies have shown that using CBD can…(4)

  • Relieve chronic pain and inflammation

  • Aid in the cessation of cigarette smoking

  • Treat epilepsy

  • Reduce anxiety-related behaviors

  • Ease inflammation and may help patients with Type 1 diabetes and acne

How to choose a CBD product?

As a rule, CBD products that are derived from hemp plants are legal in the United States. But, it’s always best to check the rules in your individual state and locality prior to purchasing. (2)

CBD comes in the form of oils, vapors, edibles, creams, topicals and more. As with any product, if you’ll be ingesting it or putting it on your body, you want to make sure it’s the highest quality available. A business should be forthcoming about where they source from and be able to answer any questions you have about the final product.

Some things to look for include:

  • Organic growing practices

  • 3rd party lab results

  • A full-spectrum product

In the meantime?

While you do your research on whether or not to implement CBD into your healthcare regimen… did you know that our Dead Sea magnesium supplements can help with many of the same issues that CBD oil helps with? It’s a 100% natural solution for pain, insomnia, and anxiety. And the only ingredients? Dead Sea magnesium chloride, purified water and naturally occurring trace minerals.

Just like our bodies are hardwired to function with endocannabinoids, our bodies MUST have magnesium to function. A few sprays daily, or a relaxing soak in a magnesium bath can make sure that your body has adequate access to magnesium.
